Scene of the Crime: Christmas games and a call for playtesters!

Welcome to Scene of the Crime

Welcome to the Freeform Games murder mystery newsletter.

As Christmas approaches, we talk about playing our games during the festive season, we talk about office parties, and we need playtesters!

Enjoy!

Christmas games

Christmas is rapidly approaching – and these are our Christmas games:

Cover to Christmas Lies, a murder mystery game
Cover to The Night Before Christmas, a murder mystery game.
Cover to Christmas Reunion with Death, a murder mystery game.

While our Christmas murder mystery games have a specific festive theme, you can host any of our games during the festive season.

And with a few adjustments, you can make them Christmassy as well! (Even the ones that, strictly, aren’t held during the festive period.)

Looking for playtesters – The Show Must Go On!

Our next game will be The Show Must Go On! and we’re looking for playtesters.

This game is a little different – we’ve written this so that it can be played in under an hour (including introductions and debriefing).

We are sometimes asked for shorter games – and a short game is easier for us to demonstrate at a games convention where one-hour slots are normal.

Here’s what you need to know:

In seven days, the curtain rises for the opening night of the Haberford Amateur Dramatic Society’s refreshing take on Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare. However, one of their lead actors, Edna Crossley, was found dead two days ago: she had been murdered!

Now, with one week to go, the company meets to find a replacement for Edna. Thanks to HADS’ inclusive casting policy, anyone can audition for any role – no matter their age, race, gender or experience. (Edna, playing teenage Juliet, was in her fifties.) Competition is likely to be fierce!

But why is Detective Morgan Camberwell here? Surely they can’t think that Edna’s murderer is here? Find out at The Show Must Go On!

The Show Must Go On! is a light-hearted English amateur dramatics-themed murder mystery for 9-13 players and a host. All characters are ungendered, and it takes about an hour to play. For ages 15+

If you’re interested in playtesting, we need feedback back by the end of February 2025.

The game isn’t quite ready yet for playtesting, but we think it will be ready by the end of December (if not before).

We are looking for ten groups to playtest The Show Must Go On! and give us feedback.

Please complete this form if you would like to playtest The Show Must Go On!

(We already have enough playtesters. We’ll leave the form open for a couple more days, then close it and choose ten at random.)
